Bread Recipe

Requested by smoothsolidade

I have made bread for years and love doing it..by hand…no machine.  And this recipe is the one I have used over and over. I tore it off a flour bag one time and still have the original torn paper.  This recipe is so easy and the ingredients you mix in one at a time in the order on the list.  Hope you all enjoy.

Bread Recipe

Ingredients

1 packet active dry yeast (if you buy yeast in bulk that is 2 and 1/4 tsp)

2 cups warm water

1/3 cup honey OR molasses Or syrup

2 tablespoons melted soft shortening like butter or crisco (not oil or margarine)

2 Teaspoons salt

5 1/2 cups to 6 cups flour  (whole wheat or white)

Directions

In a large bowl, put the ingredients in …in the same order they are on the list and mix after you add each one.

When you get to the flour, mix in one cup at a time and when it starts getting thick, I use my hands to add flour and knead it in until the dough is no longer sticky.

Let rise 2 hours or til doubled in size

divide into two sections and shape into loaves and put into greased bread pans.

let rise until doubled in size again.

Bake at 375 degrees until deep golden brown..(about 30 to 40 minutes depending on where you are)

And son and I like to rub butter on the crust after it is finished cooking.

Hope You Enjoy 🙂
