This Little Light Of Mine

Shadows can do two things. If you are standing in your own shadow, then you are allowing the darkness to engulf you. But, if you are looking at your shadow and seeing it larger than life, then you are giving power to yourself.

This is me and how I see myself. Son says I use my power chair like it is part of my body and I do. Some people look awkward and ill at ease when in a wheelchair or power chair. And that limits them. I see myself like above and do not even see the power chair under me. A dear friend told me the other day that she never even noticed the forearm crutches I used when she came to visi me in person because she was too busy seeing me…Deb.

When we are survivors, we step out into the sun and we keep moving and keep fighting and we see the world in a light that others do not see. If we keep ourselves in the dark, in our own shadow then the darkness becomes huge and it is hard to find our way out. Instead of living, we become like the shadows around us devoid of light.

Living things need light to grow and plants will bend and turn to find the light. We as humans need that light too and not just in sunlight. We need the light of optimism, the light of being positive, the light of love and kindness and joy, the light that being a survivor brings. And the first way to be in the light is to let our own light shine.

Remember that song we sang as kids called “This little light of mine”?  Well, it is still true today. We do not want to hide our light from others or even from ourselves. Our light is what makes us the survivors we are. It shines when we are conquering, when we are working to do something good, when we are loving others, when we love ourselves, when we help ourselves.  If your light has gone out, rekindle it. You may start with a tiny flicker in a dark room, but step by step it will grow and so will you and you will realize that you CAN be the survivor that others want to be like.

And so my gift to you all today is to lean my candle out to touch yours and help you get your own flame going. And when you feel the energy rising and you feel your light shining…pay it forward y helping someone else light their candle. Never stand in your own shadow or in the shadow of another. You are worthy of having your own life shine.
