We CAN Choose The Right Thing To Do #HarveyandKirbySample
I have always believed that life was about choices. We can not always choose what happens to us or others but we CAN choose how we respond to it. And we CAN choose to do good instead of harm.
Last night I was trying to catch up on the news and came across a report that caught my attention and my heart. A Detective was trying to apprehend a man who stole money from a convenient store and came running out of the store. He struggled with the man trying to get him under control and handcuffed and as seems to be the usual, there were people standing around filming hoping to catch another bad cop video to put on social media.
The Detective yelled for someone to help him. Two men and I will note that they are Black, who were filming and admit they were filming because they hoped to catch another bad cop in action decided to help the officer. One man was still holding his camera as he helped wrestle the man to the ground and be handcuffed.
Now, wait a minute. This is not how the story usually goes, is it? Since when do the ones that believe all cops are killers come to help a cop? This shows we CAN make good choices instead of ones that are harmful like standing by and doing nothing and doing nothings is a choice too. And wait a minute, since people believe all cops are racist and murderers and all whites are racist and all blacks are thugs, where did these two men come from for they are certainly NOT thugs. See how harmful labels are.
This is a story I wish more media would pick up and more people would pay attention to. Color should not matter when it comes to helping someone. It should not matter period but many will not help someone who is not of their race. And these two men are heroes in my book for they decided if they went and helped then maybe a shooting would not happen.
This brings up a point that many do not seem to understand. We should be on the ride of right no matter what color, what sex, what religion, etc. And right in this case was helping the officer subdue the man before more force was needed. And their help was greatly appreciated by the officer.
It truly is time we drop the labels. They belong on soup cans not on people. We are all one thing….human beings. And it is time we dropped the hate. YES, we need to clean up some of the training used by law enforcement and get rid of the few that are truly racist but I think these two men saw that being a police officer is not always an easy job and saw that a white man was trying to avoid hurting the offender.
I hope you will take the time to watch the video and read the link for it is a really uplifting one and shows me that we can find peace among people if we want to. I hope and pray that we can learn to look at people and see their hearts instead of their color, religion or sex. I hope and pray that we can start looking for the positive instead of looking for “another video to prove a cop is bad” or anything else negative. We are what we take in and if all we take in is negativity and hatred, then that is all that our hearts will be filled with.
This in the article is so true. “What the incident captured instead wasn’t the worst aspect of police brutality, but the best example of officers and citizens banding together.” And until we are willing to come together instead of keeping the division going, we will not have this kind of cooperation.
Bystander expects to record police brutality, ends up helping officer
